Did you just take a dump on standard versioning practices?

Who was the genius that thought calling a 4.x update a “Platform Update 1” and referencing the knowledgebase would ever be a good idea? Does that person actually understand what he/she is doing?

WTF happened to calling things by Major/Minor version? As if the Client Profile wasn’t already a really stupid idea, now you come out with this crap.

Why are you messing people around like this? You realize some of us actually write software and deal with deployments?

Good old Microsoft. Sometimes it seems to me that they're a bunch of rookies ;-)

Why have you taken the time to write a blog complaining, but not actually complain on the blog that introduced the mess?

Or did your comment not get past moderation?

Arghh didn't notice this awful versioning :(

OffTopic: "As if the Client Profile wasn’t already a really stupid idea" . Why do you claim it is a "really stupid idea"?

- It's the version Windows Update installs, meant for end users ( no server side only stuff like ASP.NET ...).

- In .Net 4.0 it's much better implemented than in 3.5 SP1... but with 4.0 the reduced a lot the full framework size, so it is less needed... we'll see in new releases.

Microsoft's .Net framework team seems to have forgotten standard versioning practices with their latest .Net platform update.
...

Haha, Fuck...That...Shit.

This reminds me of the 3.0/3.5 versioning mess.

The versioning guys are utter fucking dingbats who've probably never had to deploy software in their lives, content to shit out turds every year or two.

@Rob

"Why have you taken the time to write a blog complaining, but not actually complain on the blog that introduced the mess?

It's his blog, he has his own audience so the message will reach different people. Also, on his blog he can write more than in a comment, include images, links etc. Lastly, there's such a thing as pingbacks, which (when the original blog is configured correctly) results in bog post replies ending up in the comment stream of the original blog.

Really? The name is what bothers you? Perhaps you should focus on the features it brings and train your development staff which choice to make in the Version dropdown. It's not that tough. And BTW, this came out a month ago, you're just complaining about it now?

I agree whole heartedly with this post... Just call it .NET Framework 4.0 Full Profile 2011 Platform Update (KB1234567) RTM?

Can we pick a standard versioning scheme and stick with it? PLEASE?

It is about time MS started provide more verbose descriptions of the framework updates. It is nice to know they do actually read my emails. Microsoft, don't change a thing.

@Craig,

Yes I care, specially considering that when you're making packages using NuGet for instance, you have to refer to this update as 4.01. I'd love to hear the explanation on that one.

There's no reason to provide a full description of the update. An update (including this one normally provides many fixes). That's why we have ReadMe/Links and the Internet as a whole.
